During the weekend of 24-26 June, 2011, I attended the Combat-Con in Las Vegas! Friday was dull as I could not afford to take any of the really good workshops (I was paying for this with my tax refund, hitching a ride there and back and staying at a friends timeshare) so spent Friday looking over the Strip and returned Sat for shopping and the free workshops!

I was in the Vendors area on Saturday morning and saw this display:

Now, being curious, I dropped by and looked the place over. Basically it was some guy hawking his Show, The Hunted. We talked for a few minutes and I bought the two seasons of the show, some buttons for my baldric and was about to move on when….

…a moment later, he put on the table a pic of the following movie:

I saw this and called out, “I LOVE that movie!” Then I recognized the guy behind the table as him! Robert Chapin! The writer, director and star of Ring of Steel!

Of course I bought an autograph! He told me that the reason that the sword scenes worked so well is that he spent a month choreographing the scenes. Then he mentioned that he filmed the entire movie in two weeks! Ring of Steel has some of the best, if not THE BEST sword action on film! His work shows!
So we talked for a few minutes and I moved on.

Later, I am in this workshop about Buffy meeting Highlander, and Mr Chapin enters with his panel to talk about The Hunted. Now you have to understand that I have NO idea what this is about! I’ve never seen the show and my only real interest is that I have a mild interest in lesbian vampires and a great interest in swords and loved Mr Chapin’s earlier work. Did I mention that I loved Ring of Steel?
After that panel talk was over, Mr Chapin came to me and asked me to be in an episode. He wanted me to sit in an empty auditorium, then… I have LINES!!! An unpaid untrained ‘extra’ with lines! And I am the guy who got stage fright when I played Dasher in the school play. I’m the guy who cannot remember what to say during our Sabbats… and “I” am the High Priest!
It takes four or five takes, I think I am getting better. And each take is different. That’s show biz!
So I thank Mr Chapin for letting me be in his show and move on.

SUNDAY, I am taking a workshop on Sky Pirates for the Steampunk room and instead of teaching us how to board a dirigeable, the teacher gives us his martial arts and acting background, then puts us through some exercises for acting. Where the ‘bleep’ is the fighting?
Strange thing is that I needed that workshop more than I needed the other one. I am choreographing the TAWN Lammas Sabbat in a few weeks and the lessons I learned there would be invaluable. Note that : Desert Henge Coven does a sword-fight in real time with steel swords by candlelight in a nine foot circle surrounded by people every Summer! So instead of complaining and leaving like some of the other people, I remained and worked hard! OK! I was STILL the guy in the background with a spear but I tried and I got better and that is what mattered!
Then Mr Chapin entered and asked us to be in the show and I get to be filmed practicing cutting the head off a vampire!
I LOVED IT!!!!

That’s basically it. Mr Chapin is a really nice guy who spent the Con wandering around filming and now I have to watch the show to see myself but mainly because it’s a good show and well worth watching.

When I got home, I had a glass of wine, popped the DVD into the player and stayed up well past my bedtime because I was hooked on the show! For a show with no budget, they did a great job! It is clear that they don’t take themselves very seriously and so are having fun with the show and I am very happy that Mr. Chapin asked me to be in an episode.
Please go to: The Hunted to see the website for the show!

P.S. I also snuck a pic of Mr Chapin with glowing red eyes, vampireish…
